Bonnies defeated by Penn State, Penn
2/14/05

2/014/05 - St. Bonaventure lost two matches this past weekend to #61 Penn State and the University of Pennsylvania, by 7-0 and 5-2 scores.  The losses drop the Bonnies record to 4-6 on the year.

Against Penn State, the Bonnies came out of the gates slow in doubles.  The #3 tandem of sophomore Alejandro Nery and senior Sajeel Qureshi dropped an 8-3 decision.  Down 4-7 in both remaining doubles matches, things looked bleak for the Bonnies.  However, both teams would gain some momentum.  The Bonnies top team, Seniors Nikhil Murali and Mario Arce, were able to break and get back on serve with Murali serving 6-7.  However, the team dropped the service game and lost 8-6, their first loss as a team this year.  At #2, the sophomore duo of Andrew Hart and Dejan Stankovic (pictured) would also rally and eventually win their doubles match by a 9-7 score.  The duo won 5 straight games en route to victory, pushing their record to 8-0 this spring.

In singles action, Penn State proved why they were ranked #61 in the nation and swept the Bonnies in each match in straight sets.

Against Pennsylvania, The Bonnies came out of the gates strong in doubles.  Qureshi and Nery dropped a hard-fought 8-6 decision at #3 just as Arce and Murali won an 8-6 decision at #1.  The Bonnies needed Stankovic and Hart to win to take a 1-0 lead and they were in a tiebreaker at 8-8.  Stankovic and Hart played a solid tiebreaker and were able to win the match and give the Bonnies a 1-0 lead heading into singles.  Hart and Stankovic remained undefeated in doubles, sporting a perfect 9-0 record.

In singles, the Bonnies were hoping to get the 3 necessary wins needed to win the dual match.  Unfortunately Hart, Qureshi, Stankovic and Murali all dropped straight set decisions and put Penn up for good 4-1 with Nery and Arce remaining on court.  Both players were in super tiebreakers for the third set.  Nery was able to win his match at #2 but Arce was upset at #1, his first loss to a player unranked in the northeast region all year.
