Bonnies nip UMBC 5-2

St. Bonaventure defeated UMBC 5-2 at the St. Bonaventure Fitness Centre, the Bonnies record improves to 9-8 with the victory.

The Bonnies came out of the gates fast and won all 3 doubles matches for the second straight match.  At #1, the duo of senior Nikhil Murali and senior Mario Arce (pictured) won 8-5.  At #2, the sophomore duo of Andrew Hart and Alejandro Nery were 8-3 winners.  At #3, freshman Antonio Farias and sophomore Dejan Stankovic won 8-3. 

Arce finished off a perfect weekend with a a straight-set victory for the Bonnies at #1, giving the team a 2-0 lead.  Nery dropped a close first set and was leading 2-1 when his opponent retired with an ankle injury. Murali won his second straight singles match with a straight-set victory at #3 to give the Bonnies a 3-0 lead.  Hart scored a hard-fought straight-set victory at #4 to clinch the match for the Bonnies.  Stankovic and senior Sajeel Qureshi  dropped matches at 5 and 6 to strong opponents to give UMBC their only 2 points of the afternoon.    

 LOOKING AHEAD

The Bonnies play their home finale on Saturday 3/19 against New York State rival University of Buffalo.  The Bonnies defeated the Bulls in a 4-3 thriller in the 2003-2004 season and defeated the Bulls 4-3 in mock-duel format in the fall this year.   The match is senior day for the Bonnies senior trio of Arce, Murali and Qureshi
